About the role
Accountabilities:
- Prepare, review, and file multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax, business and occupation, and gross receipts tax returns across monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual filing cycles.
- Manage a dedicated portfolio of accounting firms, serving as the primary point of contact for returns-related questions, escalations, compliance guidance, and ongoing customer needs.
- Research and resolve jurisdictional tax notices on behalf of customers, providing clear, timely, accurate, and well-documented communication throughout the resolution process.
- Perform quality assurance reviews related to sales and use tax content, jurisdictional requirements, and changes to tax forms.
- Lead onboarding and validation activities for new sales and use tax returns customers, ensuring a smooth transition into the returns platform and associated workflows.
- Communicate effectively with customers, tax jurisdictions, and internal teams during research, filing, troubleshooting, and resolution activities.
- Take ownership of customer satisfaction by responding proactively to customer needs, setting appropriate expectations, and translating complex compliance requirements into accessible and actionable guidance.
- Identify and implement automation opportunities across tax compliance workflows, helping reduce manual effort, increase accuracy, improve throughput, and enhance customer outcomes.
- Identify process and technology gaps and recommend practical improvements that reduce operational risk and strengthen the quality and efficiency of returns operations.
- Support implementation, training, documentation, and broader team enablement initiatives, including developing reusable resources and knowledge-sharing materials.
- Coordinate and deliver training for junior team members while serving as a knowledge resource for complex troubleshooting, critical compliance issues, and in-cycle risk reduction.
- Apply expert knowledge of jurisdiction websites and taxpayer-facing portals, including data-entry requirements, workflow nuances, and system limitations.
- Use AI-powered tools and automation to support return preparation, anomaly detection, notice pattern recognition, data reconciliation, and other high-value tax compliance activities.
- Critically evaluate AI-generated outputs, applying professional tax judgment to determine where automation is appropriate and where human expertise must remain central.
- Identify new opportunities for AI and automation, pilot effective approaches, document results, and share successful practices to improve team-wide capabilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and at least 5 years of directly related experience in multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax compliance, returns preparation, or tax operations.
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities, with demonstrated experience navigating ambiguous or complex tax compliance scenarios.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly to accounting professionals, customers, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and consistently meet strict filing deadlines.
- Strong adaptability and willingness to learn new software applications, technology platforms, and tax compliance tools.
- Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency, particularly Excel, including Power Pivot, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, and related functions.
- Availability to work during standard U.S. business hours.
- A Master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Experience with a Big 4 accounting firm, a large corporate tax department within a multinational organization, or a large ERP integration environment is preferred.
- Strong understanding of customer data flows from tax calculation platforms through returns management and filing workflows is preferred.
- Deep knowledge of jurisdiction configuration concepts, including nexus, exemptions, marketplace rules, filing calendars, reporting, and transaction data.
- Working knowledge of transaction flows and their downstream impact on returns preparation, mapping, and filing.
- Familiarity with transaction tax calculation, transaction data flow, returns mapping, and returns filing automation.
- Demonstrated ability to use AI-powered tools in tax compliance workflows and identify practical opportunities for AI and automation to improve efficiency, accuracy, and throughput.
- Ability to coach and mentor colleagues, share specialized knowledge, challenge existing processes constructively, and contribute to continuous team and operational improvement.
