About the role
Accountabilities:
- Lead firmware development for resource-constrained, connected devices, taking ownership from hardware selection and prototyping through production deployment and long-term field support.
- Partner with electrical engineers to evaluate SoCs, memory, sensors, and other hardware components, validate design decisions, and bring new boards and platforms to life.
- Develop and maintain low-level firmware including peripheral drivers, bootloaders, device management, firmware updates, power management, and connectivity layers.
- Bring up new hardware by configuring I/O and validating interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, BLE, CAN, and ADC while diagnosing issues across hardware and software boundaries.
- Design power-efficient architectures and protocols for battery-powered devices, optimizing power consumption and maximizing device lifetime.
- Build reliable systems for collecting, structuring, and transmitting sensor data so that information can be processed efficiently across large device fleets.
- Collaborate with product, cloud, mobile, and quality engineering teams to ensure firmware-generated data and functionality translate into reliable customer experiences.
- Lead technical initiatives from concept and design through implementation, testing, launch, measurement, and production ownership.
- Establish engineering best practices through architecture reviews, design documentation, code reviews, post-mortems, and technical mentorship.
- Drive consensus across teams and influence technical direction while balancing system-level performance, reliability, maintainability, and customer impact.
- Use automation, testing, and AI-assisted development tools thoughtfully to accelerate delivery while maintaining a high standard of software quality.
- 8+ years of professional experience developing firmware for resource-constrained embedded systems and products deployed to real customers.
- Strong proficiency in C, including the ability to reason about compiler behavior, memory, linker maps, stack traces, and low-level system failures.
- Significant experience with bare-metal and RTOS development, such as Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent, including scheduling, memory management, synchronization, and timing decisions.
- Proven experience bringing up new hardware platforms and debugging first-power-on issues in close collaboration with electrical engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of low-level interfaces and protocols including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC.
- Practical hardware-debugging experience using tools such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and RF spectrum analyzers.
- Demonstrated Staff-level technical scope, with experience leading initiatives across hardware, firmware, cloud, and quality disciplines from concept through production.
- Strong systems thinking and cross-layer judgment, with the ability to understand how low-level engineering decisions affect end-user experiences.
- Excellent technical communication skills, including the ability to produce actionable design documents, code reviews, technical proposals, and post-mortems.
- Ability to move quickly in a high-growth environment while maintaining reliability, automated testing, maintainability, and production quality.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools as part of an everyday engineering workflow, applying sound technical judgment to their output.
- Strong collaboration, mentorship, influence, and consensus-building skills appropriate for a Staff-level individual contributor role.
- Deep expertise in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), including PHY-level understanding and power-efficient system orchestration.
- Experience with cellular IoT technologies such as LTE-M or NB-IoT, including modem integration, power-state management, and certification requirements.
- Embedded security experience covering secure boot, firmware signing, cryptography, and manufacturing-ready key management.
- Experience designing fleet-scale OTA/device firmware update systems, including A/B partitioning and rollback strategies.
- Embedded Linux experience with technologies such as Yocto, Buildroot, kernel drivers, and device trees.
- Experience with CAN/J1939 in commercial vehicle environments.
- Proficiency with Python or Bash for developer tooling and hardware-in-the-loop test automation.
- Experience working with electronics manufacturing, factory processes, quality assurance, and production issue resolution.
- Annual base salary: $162,400–$290,000 USD, with actual compensation determined by factors such as location, skills, knowledge, and experience.
- Eligibility for an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, plus potential ongoing equity refresh opportunities based on performance and applicable plan terms.
- Potential eligibility for a performance-based bonus or variable compensation program.
- Competitive total compensation designed to reward high-impact performance.
- Fully remote work for eligible candidates residing in Canada.
- Flexible working arrangements designed to support different working styles and team needs.
- Comprehensive healthcare and parental leave programs.
- Professional development stipend to support continued learning and career growth.
- Opportunities to work on large-scale IoT products with direct real-world impact across transportation, industrial operations, and other physical industries.
- Collaborative, high-caliber engineering environment with opportunities for technical leadership, mentorship, and career progression.
- Paid time off and other benefits designed to support long-term employee wellbeing and success.
- Inclusive workplace culture that values diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and approaches to solving complex technical problems.
