About the role
Accountabilities:
- Accurately code and abstract outpatient medical records according to assigned workloads, established guidelines, and expected productivity standards.
- Perform accurate coding and abstraction of complex outpatient surgery procedures, applying appropriate clinical and procedural knowledge.
- Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT-4 procedure codes in accordance with national standards, departmental policies, and applicable coding guidelines.
- Review medical records carefully to ensure coding and abstraction accurately reflect documented diagnoses, procedures, and services.
- Maintain an organized and accessible system of personal coding reference materials to support consistent, efficient, and accurate work.
- Participate in educational activities and ongoing professional development to maintain and strengthen coding knowledge and skills.
- Follow the AHIMA Code of Ethics and maintain a high standard of professional integrity throughout coding and abstraction activities.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information is required; candidates with CCS certification and two years of coding experience may also be considered.
- Current certification as a Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) is required.
- At least two years of previous coding experience using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding systems, ideally with experience in outpatient surgery.
- Demonstrated ability to accurately code complex outpatient procedures while meeting established productivity and quality expectations.
- Strong knowledge of national coding standards, departmental guidelines, and professional coding ethics.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to interpret clinical documentation accurately.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage assigned records efficiently and consistently.
