About the role
Accountabilities:
- Influence the technical direction and architecture of critical backend systems responsible for job processing, workflow execution, and code execution.
- Design, build, test, and maintain robust, highly available systems capable of supporting substantial data throughput and growing customer workloads.
- Improve the performance and scalability of job and action processing systems to meet increasing demand and reliability requirements.
- Develop internal and customer-facing controls for job prioritization, execution management, and workload balancing across multi-tenant environments.
- Build and enhance capabilities that allow customers to safely execute code within the platform.
- Investigate complex infrastructure, runtime, storage, and system-level issues using logs, traces, metrics, tests, and focused reproductions to identify root causes.
- Write and review high-quality, maintainable, well-tested code while contributing improvements to engineering standards and developer productivity.
- Take ownership of technical problems and solutions throughout their lifecycle, from implementation through production monitoring, customer feedback, and continuous improvement.
- Identify opportunities to improve both the codebase and engineering processes, and actively contribute to making the broader team more effective.
- Collaborate across the technology stack when needed, contributing to infrastructure, backend, and frontend initiatives beyond the primary area of responsibility.
- Explore and refine the use of AI and LLM-based tools to improve engineering productivity, development workflows, and software delivery.
- Share technical knowledge and learnings with colleagues and the wider engineering community through documentation, collaboration, and technical content.
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a demonstrated track record of building and maintaining production-quality software.
- Strong backend engineering fundamentals and an interest in working on high-throughput, highly available, and distributed systems.
- Experience or strong interest in areas such as Linux systems, namespaces, file descriptors, Unix sockets, mounts, networking, and process isolation.
- Experience with container runtimes, orchestration systems, code execution platforms, or similar infrastructure technologies is valuable.
- Knowledge of filesystems and storage technologies, including POSIX behavior, content-addressed storage, or crash recovery, is a plus.
- Experience working with low-level system primitives using languages such as Rust or Go is advantageous.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities, including the ability to isolate complex issues through logs, traces, metrics, testing, and targeted reproductions.
- Comfortable working across a broad technical environment rather than being limited to a single specialized area.
- Willingness to work with technologies such as Ruby, Rails, React, TypeScript, Rust, Go, PostgreSQL, Redis, AWS CDK, and Docker, with the understanding that expertise in every technology is not required.
- Strong sense of ownership, accountability, curiosity, and willingness to contribute wherever the team needs support.
- Ability to prioritize meaningful business and technical problems rather than pursuing complexity for its own sake.
- Interest in developer experience, engineering efficiency, build performance, testing quality, and effective use of modern development tools including LLMs.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a respectful and supportive approach to working with colleagues.
- Ability to work effectively in a sustainable environment that values reasonable working hours, realistic planning, continuous learning, and long-term performance.
- No specific educational background is required; demonstrated technical capability, foundational knowledge, and professional experience are the primary considerations.
- Candidates should be based in the Eastern Time Zone, with a preference for proximity to the Greater Boston area.
- Target salary range of $210,000–$220,000, plus equity.
- Fully remote work within the United States.
- Opportunity to work on highly visible backend systems with significant technical impact.
- Broad technical exposure across backend engineering, infrastructure, execution systems, and developer experience.
- Supportive and collaborative engineering environment with strong opportunities for learning and professional growth.
- Emphasis on sustainable workloads, reasonable working hours, and taking holidays without a culture of overwork.
- Strong focus on developer productivity, engineering quality, and effective use of modern AI-assisted development tools.
- Inclusive workplace that values diverse perspectives, respectful collaboration, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
