About the role
Accountabilities:
- Lead daily import and export compliance operations across the US and Canada while providing guidance to regional teams supporting international operations.
- Oversee customs brokers and facilitate efficient, accurate, and timely customs clearance activities.
- Develop, implement, and maintain trade compliance programs, policies, procedures, controls, and governance frameworks aligned with applicable customs and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with customs authorities, regulatory agencies, brokers, internal stakeholders, and external customers on import and export matters.
- Establish and execute audit programs covering import entries, export filings, valuation methodologies, documentation, and other trade compliance activities.
- Manage and assign HTS classifications, Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs), FDA import product codes, Schedule B classifications, and country-of-origin determinations.
- Maintain import/export records in accordance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
- Develop and deliver global trade compliance training for cross-functional teams.
- Ensure transactions are appropriately screened against denied-party and restricted-entity lists, restricted end uses, and potential diversion risks.
- Conduct internal audits and business assessments throughout the product lifecycle, from early-stage product classification through final delivery.
- Monitor and report key performance indicators for import and export activities, using findings to drive continuous process improvement.
- Build strong working relationships with R&D, Logistics, Supply Chain, Commercial, Tax, Legal, plant, and warehouse teams involved in international trade activities.
- Identify opportunities to reduce duties and other trade-related costs and provide actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
- As a people leader, foster inclusion, develop talent, empower teams, align objectives, and remove barriers to effective performance.
- High school diploma or equivalent with 12+ years of relevant International Trade Compliance or Supply Chain Management experience; alternatively, an Associate’s degree with 10+ years, Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years, Master’s degree with 6+ years, or PhD with 2+ years of relevant experience.
- Deep expertise in international import/export compliance, including US and Canadian customs regulations and requirements applicable to global trade.
- Strong knowledge of importing into WCO/WTO member countries, exporting, EAR classification, OFAC, BIS requirements, Harmonized Tariff Classification, customs valuation, denied-party screening, country of origin, and CTPAT.
- Experience working with Partner Government Agencies such as the FDA, ideally within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or broader life sciences sector.
- Strong understanding of duty reduction and elimination programs, including Free Trade Agreements, Duty Drawback, Foreign Trade Zones, preferential origin programs, and Temporary Import Bonds.
- Demonstrated experience implementing, managing, auditing, and improving trade compliance programs.
- Strong knowledge of US and Canadian customs laws and regulations, with a US Customs Broker License considered highly valuable.
- Experience identifying compliance gaps, assessing risk, and recommending practical improvements across global supply chain operations.
- Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence internal and external partners without direct authority.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities with limited supervision.
- Sound judgment and the ability to provide credible oversight, advice, and counsel on complex import and export compliance matters.
- Working knowledge of SAP Global Trade Services (SAP GTS) is preferred.
- Experience in people leadership, including creating inclusive teams, coaching employees, developing talent, and empowering teams to achieve business objectives.
- Annual salary: $143,225–$185,350 USD for locations outside the Bay Area.
- Bay Area salary range: $157,590–$203,940 USD annually.
- Actual compensation may vary based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant factors.
- Potential eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.
- Potential eligibility for discretionary stock-based long-term incentives, depending on role eligibility.
