About the role
Accountabilities
- Provide expert DB2 application DBA support for mainframe clients, covering database creation, development, administration, maintenance, and tuning across development, test, and production environments.
- Diagnose and resolve DB2 SQL and database performance issues, including optimization initiatives designed to improve efficiency and reduce MIPS consumption.
- Maintain operational excellence and production stability across online and batch environments through continuous improvements, proactive monitoring, and performance analysis.
- Perform day-to-day database administration activities, including backups, restores, space and extent monitoring, reorganizations, object creation, test-data refreshes, and environment changes.
- Plan and implement database changes required to support business growth, application projects, new DB2 versions, and evolving client requirements.
- Develop, document, and maintain logical database standards, procedures, archive processes, disaster recovery procedures, and security practices.
- Troubleshoot production database issues and provide technical guidance to application development and production support teams, including support for performance testing and operating-system/database tuning.
- Review DB2 security configurations, identify potential risks, and support security-related requests and remediation activities.
- Support multiple DB2 subsystems and client environments simultaneously while maintaining service-level and performance commitments.
- Work with vendors and internal technical teams to investigate complex database problems and deliver timely solutions.
- Fulfill client requests and change orders related to DB2 environments, including support for client migrations and newly transitioned accounts.
- Partner with project managers and migration teams to resolve technical hurdles and keep client transitions aligned with targeted timelines.
- Collaborate with disaster recovery teams to execute recovery plans and successfully restore application database objects when required.
- Provide 24/7/365 support across multiple time zones, including participation in an on-call rotation.
- Follow established IT service management and change-control procedures while maintaining strong client communication and documentation.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience, with 10+ years of professional experience in DB2 administration and application support.
- Extensive experience administering and supporting Mainframe DB2 environments, including multiple DB2 subsystems and complex client applications.
- Demonstrated expertise in DB2 performance tuning, including SQL optimization, buffer pool tuning, database configuration analysis, and initiatives to reduce MIPS consumption.
- Strong knowledge of DB2 control functions and experience building and supporting a broad range of DB2 objects, including tablespaces and application database structures.
- Experience analyzing new DB2 releases and identifying functionality that can improve client environments, as well as experience with database reorganizations, space calculations, test-data refreshes, and disaster recovery.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve production database issues, support DB2 security requirements, assess security risks, and work with vendors to resolve technical challenges.
- Experience with CA, BMC, and IBM tools for DB2 is preferred, as is experience establishing database management, disaster recovery, security, maintenance, and utilization policies and procedures.
- Strong understanding of mainframe database operations, client support, change management, and service-level expectations.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate technical issues and solutions clearly to clients, technical teams, and stakeholders.
- Highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently while also contributing effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, short deadlines, and high-pressure production situations.
- Willingness and ability to participate in after-hours and on-call support for multiple client environments.
- Remote work with flexibility to work from home or an office when client requirements permit.
- Salary range of $100,000–$148,000 annually, with placement depending on skills, experience, internal equity, and business needs.
