About the role
Accountabilities
- Lead complex SALT engagements: Manage multistate sales and use tax engagements from planning through delivery, ensuring accurate, timely, high-quality work while providing strategic oversight and managing project economics and profitability.
- Advise clients on technical matters: Serve as a senior technical resource on sales and use tax issues, conduct complex research, develop tax strategies, and provide practical recommendations to minimize clients' state and local tax exposure.
- Manage audits and controversies: Lead state and local tax audits, advocate for client positions with government authorities, manage communications and expectations, and maintain productive relationships with tax officials.
- Drive practice development: Lead SALT initiatives, improve processes and service offerings, and identify opportunities to expand capabilities and enhance the client experience.
- Strengthen client relationships: Develop a deep understanding of client businesses and industries, collaborate across service lines to identify integrated solutions, and contribute to expanding existing relationships and generating new opportunities.
- Support business growth: Work with senior leadership to identify business development opportunities, develop referral networks, participate in industry and community activities, and contribute to the long-term growth strategy of the practice.
- Develop talent: Mentor and coach managers, seniors, and staff, provide meaningful feedback and delegation, and create opportunities for professionals to build technical expertise and leadership capabilities.
- Promote innovation: Evaluate emerging technologies, AI tools, automation, and workflow improvements that can increase quality, efficiency, scalability, and consistency across the practice.
- Represent the practice externally: Contribute to professional organizations, publications, conferences, and speaking engagements on relevant technical and industry topics.
- Maintain technical excellence: Monitor nationwide SALT developments and communicate relevant changes internally while continuously strengthening technical knowledge and professional capabilities.
- Experience: At least 10 years of progressively complex State and Local Tax experience, with demonstrated expertise in sales and use tax.
- Education: Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting, taxation, or a related discipline; an advanced degree such as a law degree may also be relevant.
- Professional credentials: CPA or CMI certification is preferred.
- Technical expertise: Strong proficiency in complex SALT research, tax planning, technical analysis, opinion papers, protest documents, and other technical communications.
- Client advisory skills: Demonstrated ability to understand client businesses and industries, develop practical tax strategies, and communicate complex issues clearly to clients and stakeholders.
- Audit and controversy experience: Experience managing state and local tax audits and advocating client positions in potentially adversarial settings while maintaining constructive government relationships.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams, with strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative leadership style.
- Business development: Ability to build and maintain client, professional, government, and referral relationships and contribute to new business development.
- Project management: Strong ability to manage multiple clients, assignments, teams, deadlines, budgets, and competing priorities while maintaining high-quality deliverables.
- Technology: Proficiency with tax compliance and legal research software, Microsoft Office, and technology-enabled tax service delivery, including AI and automation tools.
- Leadership mindset: Strong professional judgment, accountability, intellectual curiosity, ownership mentality, entrepreneurial thinking, and comfort operating in an evolving, growth-focused environment.
- Professional development: Commitment to completing at least 40 hours of continuing professional education annually to maintain and expand technical and business skills.
