About the role

Accountabilities:

    • New product development: Develop new structural connection products and enhancements to existing hardware, taking concepts from initial definition through prototyping, testing, and technical validation.
    • Concept development: Translate market needs, installation challenges, structural requirements, and manufacturing constraints into practical and commercially viable product concepts.
    • Engineering analysis: Perform calculations and analytical evaluations to understand structural behaviour, compare design alternatives, establish requirements, and support product-development decisions.
    • Prototyping and CAD: Create CAD models, drawings, prototypes, test fixtures, and supporting materials needed to develop and evaluate new concepts.
    • Physical testing: Participate directly in laboratory and research activities, including specimen preparation, timber component handling, prototype installation, fixture setup, instrumentation support, testing, and failure-mode evaluation.
    • Test planning and validation: Develop test plans, coordinate specimens and instrumentation, support or execute testing programs, and analyze results to validate product performance.
    • Design iteration: Refine products based on testing outcomes, engineering analysis, constructability, manufacturability, installation requirements, cost considerations, and field feedback.
    • Applied research: Investigate connection concepts, materials, testing approaches, technical standards, approval pathways, and emerging technologies relevant to mass timber construction.
    • Project ownership: Lead assigned R&D projects from initial concept through validation, managing priorities, schedules, budgets, contributors, and external partners as required.
    • Technical documentation: Prepare clear documentation covering assumptions, calculations, methodologies, test results, design decisions, revisions, and project conclusions.
    • Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with application engineering, technical service, business development, operations, manufacturers, research laboratories, universities, and other external stakeholders.
    • Requirements:

      • Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, Timber, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline.
      • Professional credentials: Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, or EIT status with the ability to pursue P.Eng. designation in the near term.
      • Experience: Approximately 3–8 years of relevant experience in engineering, structural design, product development, physical testing, or applied research; candidates with other relevant levels of experience may also be considered.
      • Engineering expertise: Strong understanding of mechanics, structural behaviour, materials, and core engineering principles.
      • Industry knowledge: Experience with timber engineering, structural connections, fasteners, mass timber, or building products is strongly preferred.
      • Testing and prototyping: Experience with physical testing, laboratory research, prototyping, product validation, or experimental engineering is a strong asset.
      • Technical tools: Experience using CAD and engineering analysis tools.
      • Problem-solving: Ability to tackle open-ended technical problems, develop sound engineering recommendations, and turn uncertainty into practical solutions.
      • Product mindset: Ability to balance technical performance with manufacturability, cost, quality, installation requirements, and real-world construction considerations.
      • Project management: Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to take ownership of technical projects and move them forward independently.
      • Communication: Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to explain engineering decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
      • Collaboration: Ability to work independently while partnering effectively with engineers, technologists, operations teams, suppliers, manufacturers, and external research organizations.
      • Language: Professional proficiency in English is required.
      • Benefits:

        • Competitive compensation: CAD $80,000–$120,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
        • Remote flexibility: Remote position based in Surrey, British Columbia.
        • Hands-on impact: Opportunity to develop physical products and directly influence a growing mass timber technology portfolio.
        • End-to-end ownership: Exposure to the complete product-development lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through testing and market-ready validation.
        • Technical growth: Opportunities to deepen expertise in structural engineering, mass timber, product development, testing, and applied research.
        • Collaborative environment: Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering, operations, manufacturing, research, and commercial teams.
        • Industry impact: Contribute to structural solutions used in real mass timber construction projects across North America.
        • Innovation-focused work: Join a small, agile environment where technical ideas can move quickly from concept to practical application.
