Accountabilities
- Lead finance and accounting activities across assigned areas, including full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and daily finance operations.
- Prepare accurate monthly financial statements within established deadlines and provide analysis of operating results, budget variances, trends, and key business drivers.
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and ensure accounts are fully supported by appropriate documentation and audit evidence.
- Lead and support the annual budgeting process for assigned areas, working closely with operational leaders and other stakeholders.
- Prepare accurate external funder reports and ensure all submissions meet applicable requirements and deadlines.
- Coordinate and prepare audit requirements, respond to auditor inquiries, and support an efficient and well-documented audit process.
- Identify and implement improvements to financial processes, systems, internal controls, and operating practices to increase efficiency and safeguard organizational assets.
- Lead, coach, motivate, and develop finance team members through regular feedback, performance development planning, and professional growth opportunities.
- Support recruitment and onboarding of finance employees and promote consistent approaches to learning, recognition, performance, and team engagement.
- Provide financial guidance to operational and corporate stakeholders, helping leaders understand financial results and make informed decisions.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal teams, senior management, vendors, auditors, and other external partners.
- Support organizational strategy by identifying emerging opportunities, promoting effective financial practices, and aligning finance activities with broader business priorities.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing work environment while supporting compliance with applicable policies, regulations, confidentiality requirements, and workplace standards.
- Encourage the effective use of technology and data-driven systems to improve the capture, transformation, reporting, and distribution of financial information.
- Post-secondary degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related discipline.
- Professional accounting designation such as CPA, CMA, CGA, or CA, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- At least 5 years of accounting or finance experience, including a minimum of 2 years of people management or leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards applicable to not-for-profit organizations.
- Demonstrated controllership expertise, including the ability to manage budgets, forecasts, financial reporting, and performance insights.
- Experience preparing or supporting funder reports is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of SAP, BOARD, Microsoft Excel, and Outlook.
- Strong analytical capabilities, with the ability to conduct detailed financial analysis, identify root causes, and translate numbers into actionable business insights.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, adapt to change, and balance competing priorities effectively.
- Strategic thinker with strong communication and influencing skills, capable of guiding and educating senior decision-makers.
- Proven ability to coach, motivate, and develop teams while fostering collaborative and positive working relationships.
- Self-motivated, organized, and results-oriented, with sound judgment and strong attention to detail.
- French-language skills are considered an asset in designated French-language areas.
- Ability to meet applicable screening requirements, which may include a satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search or Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Ability to comply with applicable safety requirements and use personal protective equipment where required.
- Permanent, full-time position with a 1.0 FTE schedule and 75 hours bi-weekly.
- Remote/work-from-home arrangement for successful candidates residing in Nova Scotia, with occasional on-site attendance as required.
