About the role
Accountabilities
- Analyze clinical and operational workflows with customers, database administrators, IT support teams, management, and healthcare vendors to develop detailed system-to-system interface and data conversion specifications.
- Assess hardware and software requirements needed to implement interfaces and support data conversion into the Epic environment.
- Meet regularly with customers to review requirements, clarify specifications, prioritize interface initiatives, and communicate implementation plans.
- Develop and deliver training for customers, hospital staff, designated trainers, operations teams, and help desk personnel on new or modified systems and application functionality.
- Maintain an interface design guide and train interface developers on standards for maintainability, accuracy, security, performance, and supportability.
- Perform code and interface reviews to ensure solutions comply with established technical and design standards.
- Translate interface specifications into working data flows and develop complex mappings and filtering logic using Epic Bridges and the Rhapsody Interface Engine.
- Design and execute interface validation plans, coordinate testing activities, and oversee validation efforts involving technical resources and interface analysts.
- Monitor system activity across UNIX and Windows environments and troubleshoot interface performance and operational issues.
- Work with Epic data structures, including CACHE-based structures, and develop file off-load and reporting routines using supported tools.
- Coordinate TCP/IP communication configurations for system-to-system interface connectivity.
- Develop and maintain detailed technical, operational, interface, and system documentation.
- Partner closely with database and system administrators to implement, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize supported systems.
- Lead the design and implementation of interfaces between Epic, state and federal systems, and ancillary healthcare applications through detailed project plans, dependencies, milestones, and critical-path activities.
- Track project tasks and deliverables across internal teams, vendors, and customers, proactively identifying risks and escalating missed or at-risk milestones to management.
- Coordinate project meetings, prepare progress materials, document outcomes, and provide regular status reports to leadership.
- Own and coordinate tickets associated with interface projects and ensure timely resolution of assigned technical issues.
- Diagnose application and interface problems and develop corrective action plans involving procedures, data corrections, scripts, interface engine modifications, upgrades, and application fixes.
- Coordinate production and test-environment installations, data conversions, application upgrades, and validation activities.
- Provide primary technical support for interface-related issues, including ADT, order entry, results reporting, billing, and other critical healthcare workflows.
- Use Bridges and Rhapsody to troubleshoot complex issues and interpret C++ and JavaScript code when required.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule supporting system-to-system interfaces and critical electronic medical record integrations 24/7.
- Provide technical guidance on clinical applications to IT and clinical teams and perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related field, or a clinical discipline plus eight years of relevant experience; alternatively, an Associate’s degree plus nine years of relevant experience, ten years of relevant experience without a degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of paid experience working as an Application Engineer.
- Experience with Epic data structures and Epic Clarity applications.
- Intermediate to expert-level programming experience with JavaScript and SQL.
- Experience with the Orion Rhapsody Interface Engine or an equivalent healthcare interface engine.
- Experience working with UNIX systems, particularly Rhapsody server file organization and related technical environments.
- Experience with terminal emulation, file transfer technologies, data conversion, and system integration processes.
- Experience with Cognos Framework Manager, Query Studio, and Report Studio.
- Demonstrated ability to develop healthcare interfaces using the HL7 standard and work with TCP/IP communication protocols.
- Knowledge of distributed healthcare applications such as HIS, LIS, RIS, pharmacy, registration, scheduling, patient accounts, and related clinical or administrative systems.
- Strong experience analyzing, designing, testing, validating, and supporting healthcare information systems.
- Working knowledge of hospital and clinic operations and patient-care workflows.
- Ability to independently investigate complex technical problems, identify root causes, and drive issues through resolution while maintaining a strong customer focus.
- Strong quality assurance and testing skills, including the ability to assess new software applications, features, and beta releases.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects and technical tasks while consistently meeting deadlines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical users.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard PC-based business applications.
- Preferred experience with healthcare HL7 interface training or certification.
- Preferred experience with databases such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Access, Unify, or comparable technologies.
- Preferred knowledge of Epic Bridges, EpicCare Ambulatory, Epic Scheduling, Epic Billing, and Epic Registration.
- Preferred experience with interface technologies such as HL7, OpenLink, Cloverleaf, eGate, or similar platforms.
- Epic Bridges certification is preferred.
- Experience with additional programming languages, such as Visual Basic, is a plus.
- Ability to work fully remotely Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and participate in a rotating on-call schedule.
