About the role
Accountabilities
- Own the high-level architecture and scaling strategy for core WhatsApp and communications platform components, including provider integrations, messaging abstractions, and shared APIs supporting billions of events.
- Lead the end-to-end evolution of usage metering and billing capabilities across communication channels, including rating, reserve and commit lifecycles, idempotency, reconciliation, and auditability.
- Drive the development of configurable, rules-based trust and compliance systems capable of adapting to evolving regulatory, carrier, and platform requirements.
- Lead initiatives that improve system reliability, latency, throughput, and resilience across high-concurrency APIs and time-sensitive workflows.
- Work hands-on with technologies including NestJS, Firestore, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, queuing systems, data warehousing platforms, and service-mesh-based microservices.
- Strengthen observability and operational excellence through monitoring, alerting, SLOs, incident response, and root-cause analysis, including monitoring critical financial and data integrity invariants.
- Leverage LLMs and AI-assisted development tools for coding, refactoring, testing, and debugging while establishing appropriate guardrails to improve reliability and minimize hallucination risks.
- Partner with product, infrastructure, security, finance, legal, and external stakeholders to ensure data integrity, access control, regulatory compliance, and operational reliability.
- Mentor Engineering Manager I leaders and senior engineers, develop the leadership pipeline, support succession planning, and maintain a high technical hiring bar.
- Participate in architecture and design reviews, technical deep dives, and on-call rotations while fostering a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- 9+ years of backend software engineering experience, including at least 2 years in an engineering leadership role.
- Proven experience designing and operating fault-tolerant distributed systems at significant scale, ideally involving billions of hits or events.
- Deep expertise in distributed systems, event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, and high-concurrency application design.
- Demonstrated experience building systems where transactional correctness is critical, such as metering, billing, payments, ledgers, or comparable domains.
- Strong understanding of idempotency, exactly-once processing concepts, reconciliation, transactional integrity, and auditability.
- Proven ability to improve availability, performance, reliability, and scalability of production systems under significant load.
- Strong experience with both relational and NoSQL data models, particularly for complex transactional and high-volume workloads.
- Experience designing policy-driven or rules-based systems that can adapt to changing external requirements without extensive code changes.
- Familiarity with monitoring, SLOs, alerting, incident management, and root-cause analysis in production environments.
- Understanding of AI-assisted development and techniques for mitigating LLM hallucinations, including code constraints, test scaffolding, embeddings, and context injection.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams, including Finance, Legal, and external partners.
- Pragmatic, hands-on leadership style with the ability to balance long-term architectural vision with iterative delivery and business priorities.
- Experience building usage-based billing or metering engines handling millions of transactional events per hour.
- Exposure to telecom trust and compliance frameworks such as 10DLC, toll-free verification, TCPA/TSR, DLT, carrier filtering, or number portability.
- Experience developing provider-agnostic integration layers across multiple third-party communication providers.
- Experience with AI development tools and communication APIs such as Twilio or Plivo.
- Contributions to open-source projects, internal engineering platforms, technical tools, or engineering publications.
- Opportunity to lead a high-impact engineering team responsible for a rapidly scaling communications platform.
- Significant technical ownership over distributed systems operating at very high transaction and event volumes.
- Global, remote-first working environment.
- Collaboration with product, infrastructure, security, finance, legal, and external technology partners.
- Strong opportunities for technical and leadership development, including mentoring and building future engineering leaders.
- Exposure to large-scale distributed systems, communication APIs, AI-assisted engineering, billing infrastructure, and compliance technology.
- Opportunity to shape engineering architecture, development practices, observability, and operational excellence at scale.
