About the role
Accountabilities:
- Build and evolve distributed systems: Design, develop, and operate resilient, highly scalable, low-latency services supporting pricing, product catalogs, promotional offers, and subscription transactions at global scale.
- Deliver commerce capabilities: Partner with product managers, designers, and data scientists to translate business opportunities into scalable technical solutions that support acquisition, retention, and new commerce experiences.
- Solve complex distributed systems challenges: Address race conditions, consistency guarantees, distributed transactions, throughput optimization, and other correctness and scalability challenges across critical services.
- Strengthen platform infrastructure: Evolve foundational systems to support an expanding commerce ecosystem, including advertising, gaming, live streaming, and other emerging experiences.
- Own production reliability: Take end-to-end responsibility for the reliability, availability, and performance of Tier-0 services, including participation in production on-call and incident response.
- Lead complex engineering initiatives: Take projects from initial concept through implementation and delivery, proactively identifying opportunities to improve critical systems and engineering practices.
- Translate ambiguity into solutions: Work from broad or evolving business objectives to define clear, maintainable, and scalable technical architectures.
- Collaborate across functions: Communicate technical decisions, trade-offs, risks, and system behavior effectively with both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Senior distributed systems experience: 10+ years of experience building and operating resilient, high-scale, low-latency distributed systems in production environments.
- Strong systems expertise: Demonstrated experience solving difficult correctness and reliability problems involving race conditions, eventual consistency, distributed transactions, and high-throughput architectures.
- Platform mindset: Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into practical, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions.
- Engineering leadership: Proven ability to take extreme ownership of a technical domain and lead complex engineering projects from inception through production.
- Cross-functional communication: Strong collaboration skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts and trade-offs clearly to product, design, data, and business partners.
- Programming expertise: Professional experience with one or more modern programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, C#, or Scala.
- Distributed technology experience: Familiarity with technologies such as Kafka, Elasticsearch, Hive, AWS, Presto, Spark SQL, or Apache Flink is highly valued.
- API development: Experience designing and implementing gRPC, GraphQL, or RESTful APIs.
- Data infrastructure: Experience with SQL and NoSQL, including multi-region data stores such as Cassandra, Amazon Aurora, or Memcached.
- Operational excellence: Comfort with production on-call responsibilities, incident response, and maintaining highly critical services.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
- Annual compensation: $388,000–$619,000 USD, with the range varying based on location, job family, background, skills, and experience.
