Role Overview
As a Director of Software Engineering, you’ll define and lead the engineering function behind our custom-built, internally-facing platforms, the software that powers our lead-to-cash flow, from billing and revenue enablement to the shared platform services other product teams build on. You’ll own the people, the standards, and the technical direction for this domain, acting as both the senior technical voice your teams rely on and the leader who sets where they’re headed. You’ll lead through your engineering managers and technical leads rather than as an individual contributor, and you’ll be instrumental in establishing how a domain like this operates inside a matrixed, pod-based delivery model. With your help, we’ll have a stable, scalable, and fit-for-purpose foundation to support Datavant’s journey.
In this role you will:
- Build, grow, and lead a world-class team of software engineers, engineering managers, and technical leads responsible for our custom applications — owning hiring, growth, performance, and the technical bar.
- Set the engineering standards and technology direction for the domain: development practices, technology and architecture choices, quality and testing standards, and how we manage our repositories and technical debt.
- Own our shared platform services — for example, enterprise authentication delivered as a service that other product teams consume rather than rebuild — treating them as products in their own right, with internal engineering leaders as your customers.
- Be accountable for fit-for-purpose delivery: that what your team builds holds up in production, meets the need it was built for, and doesn’t create tomorrow’s rework.
- Partner with product, architecture, security, and compliance, and commit engineers into cross-functional pods to deliver value-stream outcomes — starting with Order-to-Cash and Lead-to-Contract — that no single team owns end to end.
- Serve as a senior technical advisor and sounding board to your teams and to the pods that draw on them — engaging on architecture, trade-offs, and design, not just status.
- Champion the software solutions, processes, and standards that raise our quality bar over time and carry the business into the future.
What You Bring to the Table:
- You have 12+ years of software engineering experience, including several years in leadership — ideally including leading through other managers — building custom applications and managing SaaS solutions.
- You have a genuine engineering background — you’ve written production software and can still read and reason about code and system design. While this is not a hands-on coding role, engineers respect you as a technologist, not only as a manager.
- You have experience defining systems-level architectural and technology vision for a team or domain, and executing on that vision.
- You have working fluency in order management, billing, revenue, or closely related commercial and financial-system
