About the role
Accountabilities:
- Reference and reader advisory: Assist patrons with information, educational, and recreational reading needs using reference services, reader advisory techniques, and basic information-retrieval skills.
- Information research: Help customers locate relevant information using print resources, electronic databases, online catalogs, and community information sources.
- Customer service: Respond professionally to multiple and changing information requests while adapting recommendations and assistance to each patron’s needs.
- Circulation support: Manage patron account information, apply circulation policies and procedures, and perform standard data entry using automated circulation systems.
- Payments and account management: Collect applicable fines and fees through cash-management systems and accurately balance transactions.
- Collection maintenance: Shelve library materials according to the Dewey Decimal classification system and assist with maintaining organized collections.
- Technology support: Use Windows-based software, word-processing and spreadsheet applications, online catalogs, databases, and other library technology.
- Patron privacy: Exercise appropriate discretion when handling patron records and other confidential information.
- Operational flexibility: Adjust to fluctuating workloads, changing software or system requirements, and assignments across the library system as needed.
- Additional duties: Perform other recurring or occasional library responsibilities consistent with the scope of the position.
- Education: One year of college, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience: One year of customer service experience in a bookstore, library, or comparable environment, or an equivalent combination of qualifications.
- Information skills: Basic knowledge of information-finding strategies, print resources, online catalogs, research databases, and remote information sources.
- Library knowledge: Familiarity with how library materials and information sources are organized, including basic knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System and alphanumeric filing.
- Collection knowledge: Familiarity with library literature and collections across fiction and nonfiction subject areas, including current and established authors and titles.
- Circulation systems: Basic knowledge of automated circulation system functions and standard data-entry practices.
- Technology: Proficiency with Windows-based software and basic word-processing and spreadsheet applications, with the ability to adapt to software updates and upgrades.
- Numerical skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate cash registers, handle money, and balance accounts accurately.
- Customer service: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with library users quickly and effectively.
- Analytical ability: Strong attention to detail and the ability to analyze information needs, interpret bibliographic information, and think logically and analytically.
- Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to a team-oriented service environment.
- Adaptability: Ability to adjust easily to fluctuating workloads, changing information needs, and assignments across different areas of the library.
- Confidentiality: Ability to exercise discretion when working with patron records and personal information.
- Physical capability: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., push and pull up to 300 lbs., and move items weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Preferred language skills: Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or Vietnamese is preferred.
