About the role
Accountabilities:
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with municipal governments, including elected officials and administration, provincial agencies, economic development organizations, community groups, civic leaders, educational institutions, and workforce partners.
- Develop and execute community engagement strategies across the full infrastructure lifecycle, from site selection and pre-development through construction and long-term operations.
- Build external coalitions, facilitate education and listening sessions, and develop initiatives that create meaningful benefits for local communities.
- Represent the organization at town halls, public hearings, community events, public forums, and local media engagements.
- Monitor community sentiment, local political dynamics, and emerging issues, advising internal teams on risks, opportunities, and appropriate engagement strategies.
- Partner with real estate and infrastructure teams to incorporate community feedback into project planning, communications, and delivery.
- Collaborate with communications teams to develop proactive, locally relevant messaging for community and stakeholder audiences.
- Coordinate charitable giving, community investment, corporate social responsibility initiatives, and economic development commitments within assigned markets.
- Manage relationships with nonprofit and community partners and ensure commitments are effectively delivered.
- Work with energy and sustainability stakeholders to communicate approaches to environmental stewardship and address community questions regarding power, water, land use, and related infrastructure impacts.
- Develop repeatable community engagement processes, frameworks, and playbooks that can scale as the infrastructure portfolio expands.
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience in community affairs, public affairs, economic development, government relations, municipal or provincial government, or a closely related field.
- Direct experience working with municipal governments, elected councils, government administration, and/or provincial stakeholders on large infrastructure, construction, energy, technology, or similar projects.
- Strong understanding of local government processes, community dynamics, and political considerations affecting major infrastructure projects.
- 7+ years of relevant experience in community engagement, data centres, utilities, energy, large-scale industrial infrastructure, or local government is preferred.
- Familiarity with municipal and provincial land-use, zoning, development, and permitting processes.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholder groups, including through challenging or sensitive conversations.
- Strong coalition-building and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to develop trust and long-term partnerships.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical and operational information into clear, accessible language.
- Comfortable representing an organization publicly in town halls, hearings, community events, and media interactions.
- Experience managing corporate social responsibility, community investment, charitable giving, or economic development programs is an advantage.
- Established relationships with economic development, workforce, civic, or community organizations are desirable.
- Experience collaborating across real estate, legal, communications, infrastructure, policy, and other multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to independently manage multiple concurrent engagements across different markets.
- Demonstrated adaptability, sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to quickly understand complex policy and infrastructure issues.
- Genuine interest in the communities where you work and a commitment to creating mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Based in Alberta, Canada, or willing to relocate there.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout the region, up to 50% of the time, with occasional travel to other infrastructure markets.
