About the role
Accountabilities:
- Migrate 32-bit C++ call-handling subsystems to a 64-bit architecture, addressing compatibility and modernization requirements.
- Develop scripts, automation, and migration techniques to support the transition of operating systems from CentOS 7 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.
- Contribute to the modernization of Java-based web configurators and related platform components.
- Participate in system testing, validation, deployment, and release activities throughout the migration lifecycle.
- Update and adapt CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling to support the modernization program.
- Perform security testing, identify vulnerabilities or gaps, and implement appropriate remediation measures.
- Work independently against an established migration plan while maintaining close collaboration with the existing engineering team.
- Apply sound technical judgment to troubleshoot complex Linux, networking, virtualization, security, and application issues.
- Communicate progress, technical findings, risks, and solutions clearly with technical stakeholders and team members.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience developing C++ applications on Linux platforms.
- Minimum 5 years of experience with Linux operating systems and Bash scripting.
- Strong understanding of networking, virtualization, and security concepts and practices.
- Hands-on experience working with complex software systems and the ability to understand and modernize existing codebases.
- Strong technical problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with an established engineering team.
- Ability to work as an independent contractor in Canada, including being legally authorized to work without employer sponsorship.
- Ability to contract directly with a Canadian entity as a corporation or sole proprietor.
- Experience with multi-threaded, high-availability, or real-time systems is highly desirable.
- Previous experience with Linux operating system migrations is an advantage.
- Familiarity with Python, Java, or C# is considered a plus.
- Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps toolchains such as TeamCity, Perforce, Jenkins, or GitHub is advantageous.
- Exposure to telecommunications and voice infrastructure, including SIP, PBX, or PSTN, is a plus.
- Experience applying agentic AI techniques to software engineering is also considered an advantage.
- Remote engagement: Work remotely from Canada as an independent contractor.
- Fixed-term contract: Engagement through the end of Q1 2027.
- Technical ownership: Take a hands-on role in a significant platform modernization initiative.
- Autonomy: Work against a defined migration roadmap while contributing independently and making technical decisions.
- Collaborative environment: Partner closely with an established and experienced engineering team.
- Mission-critical technology: Work on telecommunications infrastructure where reliability, security, and modernization have a direct operational impact.
- Broad technical exposure: Contribute across C++, Linux, operating system migration, DevOps, CI/CD, security, testing, and release engineering.
- Modernization experience: Gain practical experience transforming legacy systems toward contemporary architectures and platforms.
