About the role

Associate Director, Accounting Policy

Position Summary:

National Life Group is looking for a highly motivated Associate Director, Accounting Policy, to join the corporate finance team. The role will assess complex and technical transactions, research and interpret accounting guidance and regulatory policy, and engage with senior leadership on accounting matters. This individual contributor role will work closely with other members of the controller team and business units within the Company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research relevant accounting guidance (U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles) to evaluate complex accounting issues.
  • Develop, maintain, and update the Company’s accounting policy manual and technical memos to ensure company-wide accounting policies are compliant with current accounting standards.
  • Maintain knowledge on current and emerging accounting standards, assess the impact, and collaborate with management to ensure proper and timely application of accounting standards.
  • Serve as a resource to team members and applicable internal/external stakeholders on more complex technical accounting policy and compliance issues for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provide technical accounting support on transactions and strategic initiatives.

Requirements

  • 5-7+ years of experience in accounting that directly aligns with the specific responsibilities for this position.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting required
  • CPA with previous public accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles, preferably in the life, health, or P&C insurance sector
  • Experience with accounting research tools (e.g., PwC Checkpoint, DART, CCH)
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and execute under competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external parties.
  • Inquisitive mindset with a willingness to independently seek out knowledge, ask relevant questions and clearly formulate and articulate opinions.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, ability to work flexible hours as required.
