About the role
Accountabilities
- Deploy and configure AI-enabled control solutions: Use platform tools and your HVAC expertise to model customer facilities, configure systems according to operational requirements, and collaborate with Data Science teams to prepare solutions for production.
- Commission and optimize systems: Tune deployed solutions, analyze performance, and troubleshoot control systems and equipment to ensure reliable operation and strong customer outcomes.
- Lead customer deployments: Manage multiple solutions in parallel, coordinating onboarding, deployment, support tickets, and issue resolution with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Provide technical support: Monitor deployed systems, investigate performance issues, identify root causes, assess operational risks, and implement practical solutions across control systems and equipment.
- Translate customer needs into product requirements: Work with Product teams and other Solutions Engineers to convert customer requirements and implied needs into clear documentation that can guide software development and scalable product improvements.
- Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate closely with Technical Program Managers, Data Scientists, Product, Software Engineering, and customer operations teams to deliver and continuously improve solutions.
- Act as a technical subject-matter expert: Provide technical guidance to customers and internal teams, contribute to advanced support initiatives, advise research projects, and support sales and marketing activities when appropriate.
- Develop scalable processes: Identify recurring challenges and create repeatable solutions, workflows, and documentation that improve deployment efficiency and enable the organization to scale.
- Use AI to improve engineering workflows: Independently apply AI tools to automate repetitive work, accelerate troubleshooting and onboarding, and improve day-to-day productivity.
- Contribute to continuous improvement: Participate in code repositories, refine business processes, support technical initiatives, and help establish high standards for documentation, communication, and operational excellence.
- Support field activities: Participate in customer site visits and travel as needed, with the role expected to involve approximately 25% travel.
- Controls engineering experience: 5–10 years of professional experience as a controls engineer, controls programmer, or in an equivalent technical role.
- HVAC and data center expertise: Strong knowledge of HVAC and data center cooling control strategies, including chiller plant fundamentals, configurations, sequences of operation, air-side chilled water systems, and direct expansion cooling.
- Thermodynamics knowledge: Practical understanding of thermodynamics as it applies to cooling, refrigeration, and hydronic systems.
- Industrial controls expertise: Experience designing or working extensively with commercial and industrial control systems and protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.
- Controls programming: Experience programming control systems using PLCs, ladder logic, text-based, or block programming languages.
- Field operations experience: Strong ability to work with data center operations teams and solve complex field-level operational problems.
- AI and Python capabilities: Ability to read and write Python scripts in collaboration with software engineering teams, as well as an interest in applying AI and machine learning to controls applications.
- Technical education: Degree or strong educational background in a relevant discipline such as Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Control Theory, Applied Mathematics, or another engineering/applied science field.
- Customer communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain specialized controls concepts to non-experts and AI/ML concepts to customers without an AI/ML background.
- Problem-solving mindset: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities, with a passion for finding scalable solutions to recurring technical challenges.
- Documentation and organization: Ability to own substantial areas of technical documentation and maintain high standards for clarity, accuracy, and communication.
- Customer orientation: Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs, prioritize effectively, and balance pragmatic urgency with customer satisfaction.
- Collaboration: Comfortable supporting peers, participating in pairing sessions, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams.
- AI-first approach: Experience using AI tools to improve workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and support troubleshooting and onboarding.
- Preferred experience: Exposure to rapidly prototyping technologies, owning codebases or services, cloud architecture, AI/ML in controls, statistics or analytics, optimization problems, and markup/data formats such as XML, JSON, or YAML.
